Want to Quit Teaching? What could I do if I quit teaching?

If you want to quit teaching but don't know what you could do if you leave teaching, this article shows you how to successfully do it.

Want to Quit Teaching? What could I do if I quit teaching?

A UK Department of Education survey found that 40,000 teachers left the profession in 2021-2022 before retirement. That's nearly 9% of the entire workforce. And this left around 2,300 empty work posts within schools. Moreover there were 50% more sick days taken compared to pre-pandemic figures.

If this resonates with you, you might also be thinking about quitting teaching. And that might leave you asking yourself, "What can I do if I leave teaching?"

Let's look at a couple of key aspects here, the first being why you want to quit teaching.

You might have entered the teaching profession because you wanted to make a real positive difference to young people in your local area. Helping others lit you up and energised you. But quite quickly you may have found yourself bogged down in bureaucracy, unrealistic expectations, stress and lack of time to really give the students what they need.

The decision for many teachers to leave the profession often stems from the overwhelming stress and burnout they experience. Although the pandemic notably exacerbated these pressures, stress has long been a prevalent issue within the teaching community. Prior to the pandemic, a study found that 23% of teachers described their work as consistently stressful, with an additional 38% stating it was frequently so.

The demands placed on teachers create a scenario where expectations are often unrealistic, resulting in never-ending to-do lists and a perpetual feeling of being overwhelmed. These norms have led to a severe imbalance between work and personal life, ultimately impacting the well-being of many teachers.

Teachers are under pressure to deliver high test scores while simultaneously managing their classrooms and overseeing extracurricular activities. The sheer workload frequently extends beyond contractual hours, leaving educators grappling with extensive workloads that encroach upon their personal time. Nights and weekends are often dedicated to grading assignments and planning lessons, stretching far beyond the anticipated working hours.

Starting the day early to prepare lessons and staying late to assess papers takes a toll on mental well-being and personal life.

You might have found yourself sacrificing weekends, missing birthday celebrations to mark assignments, missing family outings to prepare for parent-teacher conferences, and scarcely finding the time or energy to socialise.

The result of this is that many teachers experience severe burnout.

So what can you do? Quit teaching? Walk away from your vocation? Leave the profession that you thought you would do for your whole career?

Maybe....

But there is an alternative. One where you get to help others. You get to have that impact on young people's lives. Where you get to have control. Do things your way. Have the right work/life balance.

The holy grail for many ex-teachers is private tutoring. It allows you to do what you love, the way you want whilst earning way more money than a school teaching role despite working fewer hours.
